On May 18th, I embarked on my first ultramarathon—the North Downs Way 50, organized by Centurion Running. To qualify for the 100-mile race scheduled three weeks later, I needed to complete this 50-mile challenge in under 13 hours.
The adventure began with a journey from Zurich, Switzerland, to Fleet, United Kingdom. I chose to travel by motor scooter, guided by Google Maps through France. Leaving Zurich a bit after noon, I headed north. I camped overnight on the first night and booked a room for the next night to dry out my gear, especially my gloves, after a heavy rain during the day. The following day, I reached Calais and took a relaxing ferry ride to Dover. From there, I continued to Eastbourne, where I stayed in a beachfront hotel. After a refreshing run along the coast, invigorated by the ocean breeze and stunning views, I felt recharged.
The next morning, I drove to a trailhead to run the scenic Seven Sisters route. Running up and down the lush green fields and steep white chalk cliffs, with breathtaking views of the ocean and lighthouses, was an experience I cherished. Returning to Fleet, I prepared for the race by setting up a mini office in my hotel room, doing laundry, and savoring some great food. My pre-race nerves were palpable, but I focused on calming techniques, enjoyed a hearty pasta dinner, and prepped my gear for the big day.
Race morning arrived, and after a shower and dressing in my running gear, I rode my scooter to Farnham, where the race started. The atmosphere was electric with runners and their supporters. I picked up my tracker and race number, and soon it was time to start. I was in the second wave of runners, and as we gathered at the start line, the excitement was contagious.
As the race began, I eased into a steady pace, striking up conversations with fellow runners. I met a fascinating woman with an impressive running history, which inspired me deeply. Throughout the race, I enjoyed the diverse terrain—fields, forest trails, and scenic roads. The aid stations were well-stocked, and the volunteers' encouragement kept me motivated.
Realizing I was performing well, leading the second wave for women, I managed my energy efficiently. By the last mile, I reflected on the dream of completing 50 miles in under 13 hours, a goal I once doubted. To my delight, I crossed the finish line in 9 hours, 51 minutes, and 15 seconds - an achievement beyond my expectations.
At the finish line, I was greeted with applause, received my medal, and enjoyed some pasta and a cool drink. Relaxing in the grass and chatting with other runners, including one who recognized me from my Pacific Crest Trail journey, was a highlight.
Returning by bus to the start and then to my hotel on the scooter, I felt elated and pain-free. The North Downs Way 50 was the perfect introduction to ultramarathons, offering brilliant conditions and an excellent time. With this accomplishment, I was now qualified for my first 100-mile race in just three weeks. Reflecting on this remarkable journey, I fell asleep with a deep sense of happiness and anticipation for the next adventure.
